Gardening Glossary - E
Here you will find common gardening terms beginning with E.
- Ecosystem - a system consisting of a community of animals, plants and microorganisms and the physical and chemical environment in which they interrelate.
- Edging - creating a visual line or separation between the lawn and a garden bed, or sidewalk.
- Edging plant - a low-growing plant grown at the edge or border of a garden bed.
- Edible landscape - gardens used to grow flowers, fruits, herbs and vegetables for human consumption.
- Element - a substance that cannot be separated into different substances. All matter is made of elements.
- Endemic - plants which are native to a region and confined to only growing there.
- Endophyte - a plant living within another plant. In turfgasses, it is a fungus within the grass plant secreting substances that repel insect pests.
- Epidermis - the outer layer of plant cells.
- Epiphyte - a plant that usually grows on another plant and gets its nutrients from the air and water.
- Erect - a plant with an upright form or habit; ie: columnar.
- Erosion - the wearing away or removal of soil from weather or human damage.
- Espalier - a plant trained to grow flat against a wall or trellis.
- Established - the state of a plant when it is adjusted to the site and thriving.
- Evaporation - the process of a plant losing moisture, by the water returning to the air.
- Everblooming - flowers that bloom almost continuously during their growing season.
- Evergreen plant - plants that do not drop the current season's leaves at the end of the growing season.
- Everlasting plant - flowers and foliage that is grown for drying and preserving. Usually for decorative purposes.
- Exfoliation - when the bark of tree shreds or peels off.
- Exotic - a rare, tropical, or unusual plant.
- Eye bud - an undeveloped bud from which new growth will sprout; ie: potatoes.
