Garden Glossary - G
Here you will find a glossary of garden terms that start with the letter G.
- Gall - abnormal plant growths that are caused by various organisms, such as insects, mites, nematodes, fungi, bacteria or viruses.
- Gametophyte - the phase of a life cycle which has half the normal number of chromosomes.
- Garden - an area where people cultivate and care for plants.
- Gazebo - a freestanding, roofed, open-sided structure used for shade in a garden, as well as aesthetics.
- Genus - groups of closely related species clearly defined from other plants.
- Germinate - the beginning growth of a seed, when it sprouts above the soil.
- Girdling - removing the bark from a woody stem to kill the plant. Encircling a stem with a material so that the cambium layer is destroyed, killing the plant.
- Gland - a special pore or hair that releases a resinous, gummy or aromatic material.
- Glaucous - smooth and waxy leaves.
- Globose - rounded or ball-shaped.
- Grafting - the joining of two separate structures, such as a root and a stem or two stems, so that by tissue regeneration they form a union and grow as one plant.
- Grandiflora - a class of roses with large, clustering blooms.
- Granular fertilizer - slow-release nutrient granules that gradually feed a plant over a growing season, used for a top or side-dressing.
- Grass - a plant of the Gramineae family; mostly herbaceous plants, but it does include some woody plants such as cereals, bamboo, reeds and sugar cane.
- Green manure - an annual cover crop that is turned into the soil before it flowers.
- Greenhouse - an enclosed glass house used to cultivate tender plants, or transplants.
- Greensand - an organic source of potassium. About 7% potash plus 32 trace elements.
- Groundcover - a group of short, spreading plants used to cover a garden area.
- Growing medium - a potting soil or other such material used to cultivate plants; ie: perilite, vermiculite, peat or sand.
- Growing point - the tip of a stem, where it grows from.
- Growing season - the time between the last killing frost in Spring to the first killing frost in Autumn.
- Growth buds - a bud at the tip of a stem, or along a stem that produces leafy growth.
- Growth regulator - a chemical used to increase or decrease a plants growth.
- Grub - short, fat, worm-like larva, especially of beetles.
- Guano - dried bat or bird droppings which are high in nitrogen, and used as a plant fertilizer.
- Guard cells - specialized crescent-shaped cells that control the opening and closing of a stomata.
