Garden Glossary - I
Here you will find a glossary of garden terms that start with the letter I.
- ICRA - acronym for the International Cultivar Registration Authorities. This system is the horticulture world's attempt at self-policing of nomenclature.
- Incomplete metamorphosis - gradual growth of an arthropod that involves change in size, but not form.
- Incubation - the growth of a pathogen so that it can enter a host.
- Indeterminate - growth that is potentially limitless.
- Indicator plant - a plant specifically grown to alert gardeners of certain conditions.
- Indigenous - plant species that are native to and grow naturally in an area.
- Indirect sunlight - sunlight that is dappled or diffused, such as in a woodland area.
- Infection - the stage when a pathogen is growing in a host and causing damage.
- Inflorescence - clusters of flowers arranged on a stem in a certain way.
- Inoculant - a microorganism which is introduced into the soil to improve growht of legume crops.
- Inoculation - the introduction of a pathogen to a host.
- Inorganic - being or composed of matter other than plant and animal; often of mineral origin.
- Insecticidal soap - biodegradable soap that kills many soft-tissued insects without damaging plants, people, animals or beneficial insects.
- Insecticide - a synthetic or organic chemical used to kill or repel damaging insects on plants.
- Instar - the stage in the life of an arthropod between molts.
- Intercrop - vegetable crops that are grown together that mature at different rates.
- Internode - the area on a stem between nodes.
- Interplant - growing two different intermixed crops in an area to maximize space usage.
- Interstem - an intermediate stem piece that is grafted between the scion and teh stock.
- Introduced - a plant that is sold for the first time, or grown in a region for the first time.
- Invasive - an introduced, non-native plant that spreads quickly disrupting the local ecosystem.
- IPM - acronym for Integrated Pest Management. This is gardening using methods that minimize the threat of pests, rather than eradicating them. Think of it as preventive medicine for your garden.
- Irrigation - to supply water by artificial means, such as with sprinklers.
- ISHS - acronym for the International Society for Horticultural Science. The world's leading, independent organization of horticultural scientists.
