Here you will find a glossary of garden terms that start with the letter N.
- Nana - Latin term meaning dwarf. Seen in some small conifer names.
- Native - plants that occur, or grow naturally in an area.
- Natural - occurring in nature.
- Naturalize - to plant randomly, without a pattern.
- Needle - long, narrow, needle-like shaped leaves of pines and other conifers.
- Nematodes - microscopic, elongated, cylindrical, parasitic worms that live in water and soil.
- Neutral - referring to soil pH, meaning it is 7.0; neither alkaline or acidic.
- Night-blooming - plants that bloom only in the dark or shade.
- Nitrogen - one of the three main nutrients in a complete fertilizer, designated by the symbol N.
- Nitrogen fixing - the capture and conversion of atmospheric nitrogen gas into nitrogen compounds, stored in the soil and used by plants.
- Node - the location on a stem where buds form.
- Nodules - swellings on the roots of legumes where nitrogen-fixing bacteria live.
- Nomenclature - the study of naming plants, including spelling and format.
- Nonselective pesticide - a poison that kills a wide variety of pest species.
- Nursery - an area where young trees, shrubs, and flowers are propogated and grown until they are planted or sold.
- Nurseryman - a person who is state certified to practice growing techniques of plant material and making the proper selections for the specific needs of their customers.
- Nut - a hard and single-seed fruit found on many trees and shrubs.
- Nutrient jelly - a vegetable gelatin made from various kinds of algae or seaweed.
- Nutrient ratio - most fertilizers contain the major nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium) in proportions required by the crop.
- Nutrients - substances a plant takes in and uses as food for growth and development.
- Nymph - a stage or series of size changes between egg and adult in the life cycle of insects that go through incomplete or simple metamorphosis.
