Garden Glossary - O
Here you will find a glossary of garden terms that start with the letter O.
- Occidentale - being of Western origin.
- Offset - a young plantlet or small bulb attached to a mature plant.
- Old roses - roses that existed before 1867 when the first Hybrid Tea was introduced.
- Open-pollinated - any plant that's been pollinated in the field by nature.
- Orchard - a planting of fruit trees used for fruit production.
- Organic - of plant or animal origin.
- Ornamental - a plant grown for its aesthetic uses.
- Osmunda fiber - the fibrous roots of the Osmunda regalis fern, used in potting orchids.
- Ovary - the swollen bottom part of the pistil that contains the ovules or immature seeds.
- Ovate - a leaf that is egg-shaped, two-times as long as wide, wider below the middle and tapering to a pointed tip.
- Over-potting - repotting a plant into a pot that's too large for the size of the plant.
- Overseeding - planting on top of an existing garden or lawn.
- Overwinter - bringing a frost tender plant indoors for the winter months.
- Oxygen - O2 - a colorless, tasteless, odorless gas that is 1/5 of the volume of the atmosphere.
