Garden Bird Studies

Here you will find garden/nature-related bird studies that you can participate in. These are also called citizen science, and are a great way to get involved and also learn about nature and birds. Please note disclaimer below.

Project FeederWatch

An annual survey of birds that visit feeders in winter. Operated by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and Bird Studies Canada.

"Project FeederWatch is a winter-long survey of birds that visit feeders at backyards, nature centers, community areas, and other locales in North America. FeederWatchers periodically count the highest numbers of each species they see at their feeders from November through early April. FeederWatch helps scientists track broadscale movements of winter bird populations and long-term trends in bird distribution and abundance."

NestWatch

"Anyone can monitor nests - it's a rewarding way to spend time outdoors and participate in science."

"NestWatch is a continentwide citizen-science project and nest-monitoring database of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, funded by the National Science Foundation and developed in collaboration with the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center."

The Great Backyard Bird Count

"The Great Backyard Bird Count is an annual four-day event that engages bird watchers of all ages in counting birds to create a real-time snapshot of where the birds are across the continent. Anyone can participate, from beginning bird watchers to experts. It takes as little as 15 minutes. It’s free, fun, and easy—and it helps the birds."

Audubon Christmas Bird Count

"The Audubon Christmas Bird Count, the oldest and largest citizen science event in the world. For over a hundred years, people have gathered together during the winter holiday season to count birds. For many people, this is an annual tradition that has passed from one generation to the next. In the process, they have created a vast pool of bird data that is the most comprehensive available for mid-December to early January. It is a fertile source of information on the status and distribution of early winter bird populations and is studied by scientists and interested people the world over. And it all starts with you!"

December 14 through January 5 each year.

eBird

"eBird's goal is to maximize the utility and accessibility of the vast numbers of bird observations made each year by recreational and professional bird watchers. It is amassing one of the largest and fastest growing biodiversity data resources in existence. For example, in 2006, participants reported more than 4.3 million bird observations across North America."

Birds In Forested Landscapes

"Birds in Forested Landscapes addresses the habitat and conservation needs of forest-dwelling birds throughout North America. BFL focuses on gaps in scientific knowledge regarding the specific habitat requirements of high-priority forest birds. Collecting the information necessary to fill these gaps is daunting. The task can be accomplished, however, by harnessing the energy and skills of birders and amateur scientists continentwide."

Golden-Winged Warbler Atlas Project

"The Golden-winged Warbler Atlas Project (GOWAP) is designed to determine the population status and habitat and area requirements of the Golden-winged Warbler and the Blue-winged Warbler as well as their hybrids."

May through July.

House Finch Disease Survey

Project PigeonWatch

Urban Birds

The Ottawa Breeding Bird Count

"A volunteer based, scientifically rigorous survey of birds in an expanding city."

Excerpt from The Ottawa Breeding Bird Count.

Migrant Watch

"MigrantWatch is a participatory activity in which volunteers across the country note the arrival and presence of migratory birds that spend the winter in India. No special travel or effort is required other than noting the days on which you observe these species."
